Try these first.

Most permission, recording, and playback issues can be resolved with a few simple checks.

  1. 1
    Check the relevant iPhone permission

Open Settings → Privacy & Security, then review Microphone, Location Services, or Photos for EchoAtlas.

  2. 2
    Check the current audio route

Disconnect Bluetooth or USB audio temporarily if recording channels or playback are not behaving as expected.

  3. 3
    Close and reopen EchoAtlas

This refreshes the current audio and location session without changing your saved Echoes.

  4. 4
    Restart the iPhone

If an iOS service remains unavailable, a restart often clears the underlying audio or location state.

Getting startedHow do I record my first Echo?

Open the Atlas and tap Record. Recording begins after microphone access is granted. Tap Stop when you are finished, preview the audio, optionally add details, then tap Save. A location, note, tags, photo, and Journey are all optional.

Getting startedWhat is an Echo?

An Echo is one acoustic memory: the original audio recording, its date and time, and any optional place, note, tags, photo, favorite, or Journey association you add. Located Echoes appear on your Atlas.

Getting startedWhich devices can run EchoAtlas?

EchoAtlas is designed for iPhone and requires iOS 18 or later. Stereo and Spatial Audio capabilities depend on the iPhone model and the current microphone route.

RecordingWhy can’t I start a recording?

First check microphone access in Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and make sure EchoAtlas is enabled. If it is already enabled, disconnect external audio accessories, reopen EchoAtlas, and try again.

RecordingWhy is Stereo or Spatial Audio unavailable?

Available channel modes depend on the current input route. Stereo requires a compatible input. Spatial Audio requires supported built-in iPhone hardware and Apple’s audio capture framework, so disconnect Bluetooth, USB, or wired microphones and try the built-in iPhone microphones. EchoAtlas’s Spatial Audio path captures audio only and does not request camera access.

RecordingWhich recording format should I choose?

AAC · Balanced is a good choice for most Echoes. Compact AAC saves more space, High Quality AAC keeps more detail, and Apple Lossless prioritizes preservation over file size. These choices apply to mono and stereo recordings. Spatial Audio uses Apple’s required QuickTime format.

RecordingDoes the recommended length stop my recording?

No. The selected 15-second, 30-second, 1-minute, 3-minute, or open-ended value is guidance only. EchoAtlas never ends an Echo just because the recommended time has passed.

RecordingWhat happens if recording is interrupted?

Calls, alarms, audio-route changes, and app lifecycle changes can interrupt iPhone recording. EchoAtlas handles supported interruptions and preserves a completed draft where possible. Return to the app and review the recording before saving.

Atlas & locationCan I use EchoAtlas without location access?

Yes. You can record, save, search, organize, and play Echoes without location. An Echo without coordinates remains in the Library but cannot appear at a place on the Atlas or in Nearby results.

Atlas & locationWhy is an Echo’s location missing or inaccurate?

Location may be unavailable indoors, when permission is denied, or when iOS can only provide reduced accuracy. Check Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → EchoAtlas and enable Precise Location if you want the best available result. You can edit an Echo’s location later.

Atlas & locationWhy does Nearby show no Echoes?

Nearby needs current location access and only includes located Echoes within 10 km, or about 6.2 miles, of your position. Confirm that your saved Echoes have locations and that EchoAtlas can access your current location.

Atlas & locationWhy is my Atlas empty?

The Atlas shows Echoes that have saved coordinates. Record a new Echo with location enabled, or edit an existing Echo and add a place. When several Echoes are close together, the map may group them into a cluster until you zoom in.

JourneysHow do I record a Journey?

Open Journeys, tap to start a new Journey, give it a name, and approve the requested location access. While the Journey is active, EchoAtlas records meaningful route points and automatically associates each successfully saved Echo with that Journey. End the Journey when you are finished.

JourneysWill a Journey continue with the screen locked?

Yes, when iOS grants the required background location access. Choose Always location access when EchoAtlas explains why it is needed, and keep Precise Location enabled for the best route. Tracking runs only while that Journey is active. Force-quitting the app prevents continued tracking until you open it again.

JourneysWhy does my Journey route have a gap?

Route gaps can occur when iOS cannot obtain a reliable GPS position, background access is limited, Location Services are disabled, the app is force-quit, or the device is inside a building or vehicle with poor reception. EchoAtlas filters stale and excessively inaccurate points instead of drawing them into the route.

JourneysCan more than one Journey be active?

No. EchoAtlas keeps one clear active Journey at a time so every route point and new Echo has an unambiguous destination. End the current Journey before starting another.

JourneysDoes deleting a Journey delete its Echoes?

No. Journey association is additional information. Deleting a Journey removes the Journey and its route, but its Echoes remain normal standalone memories in your Library and on the Atlas when they have locations.

Library & playbackHow can I find an older Echo?

Use Library search for a title, note, place, locality, or tag. You can filter All, Favorites, or Nearby, sort by several properties, or use Surprise Me to rediscover a random saved Echo.

Library & playbackWhy can’t I hear an Echo?

Raise the media volume and check whether sound is being sent to Bluetooth, AirPlay, headphones, or a connected vehicle. Try disconnecting external audio, reopen the Echo, and press Play again. If only one imported file fails, the original file may use an audio format iOS cannot decode.

Library & playbackWhy is a waveform still loading?

EchoAtlas calculates the waveform from the actual audio file and caches the result. Longer or lossless recordings may take more time. Keep the app open briefly; if it never completes, reopen the Echo and verify that the recording itself still plays.

Files & storageHow do I import an existing audio file?

Open the Library and use the Import Audio button in the top-left corner. Choose one audio file, preview it, add any optional details, and save it as an Echo. EchoAtlas copies the chosen audio into its managed local storage.

Files & storageHow do I export an Echo?

Open the Echo’s detail screen and choose Share. EchoAtlas prepares the original audio together with readable JSON metadata, then opens the standard iOS share sheet so you can select the destination.

Files & storageWhere can I see how much storage EchoAtlas uses?

Open EchoAtlas Settings and review the storage section. It shows the managed local audio, photo, waveform, and related file totals. Lossless and longer recordings use considerably more space.

Files & storageWhat happens when I delete an Echo?

Deleting an Echo removes its saved entry and managed audio, photo, and waveform files. This action is permanent inside EchoAtlas, so export anything you want to keep before confirming deletion.

Files & storageWill my Echoes return after reinstalling the app?

Do not rely on reinstalling as a recovery method. Removing an app normally removes its local container. Device backup and restoration are controlled by your Apple and iPhone settings; EchoAtlas does not operate a separate cloud backup service. Export important Echoes before deleting the app.
